Island Living... Keiki Style: Caves!

1

The Big Island has tons of caves and lava tubes for exploring!  This particular one is the Kaumana Cave in Hilo.  This cave is actually the opening to a 25 mile lava tube that was created by an 1881 flow from Mauna Loa.  The opening is well-marked and a concrete staircase allows for easy entry to the cave.  You will need good shoes and flashlights for exploring.  My kids were happy staying within sight of the entrance so we didn’t have to go too far in for them to get a good feel of the cave. Caution: If your kids (or you) are claustrophobic or scared of the dark, I would just explore near the entrance. It’s still an awesome thing to behold!
